Kaiulani: A Necklace by Mikkel Brøgger

Kaiulani: A Necklace by Mikkel Brøgger

There are jewels that shimmer with beauty, and then there are those that tell a story. The Kaiulani Necklace by Mikkel Brøgger belongs to the latter — a one-of-a-kind creation that captures the meeting of earth and ocean, history and light.

A Tribute to a Princess

Named for Princess Kaiulani (1875–1899) — the last heir to the Hawaiian throne and a figure of grace, intellect, and quiet strength — this necklace embodies the same sense of luminous poise. Much like its namesake, it radiates beauty touched by melancholy: a reflection of paradise and loss, of courage in transition.

Crafted in Gold and Light

Handmade in 14 karat yellow gold, the necklace is adorned with sixteen natural gemstones, each chosen for its hue, texture, and harmony. At its heart, a faceted oval Apatite (8 × 6 mm) glows with the color of the Pacific — a vivid sea-blue captured in stone. Above it, a round cabochon Opal (3 mm) lends an ethereal shimmer, like dawn breaking over calm water.

On each side, blue-green Tourmalines (5 mm) rest in four-prong basket settings, their tones shifting between turquoise and forest. Threaded among them, three brilliant-cut white Diamonds are burnished into gold bubble links — moments of quiet sparkle that catch the eye and echo the rhythm of waves. A final touch, a marquise-cut light Opal (5 × 3 mm), glows with soft iridescence, completing the composition with warmth and grace.

Set on a fine 14 k gold cable chain (16.5 in / 44 cm) with a spring-ring clasp, the necklace bears Mikkel Brøgger’s discreet hallmark — MEB 585 — a mark of both authorship and integrity.

The Spirit of Mikkel Brøgger

Known for his poetic precision and sculptural approach to form, Mikkel Brøgger designs each piece as a meditation on balance: color against metal, fragility against permanence. The Kaiulani Necklace exemplifies this vision — a symphony of natural stones, each set to resonate with the next.

Worn alone, it is a statement of subtle grandeur. Layered, it becomes a whisper of light, sea, and story — a modern heirloom forged from craftsmanship and imagination.

An Heirloom of the Present

Like Princess Kaiulani herself, this necklace is a bridge between worlds: European artistry and island spirit, restraint and radiance, history and hope. It is a piece not only to wear, but to inherit — a treasure that carries with it both the calm of the ocean and the brilliance of its depths.
