Gemstone Drop Earrings: A Journey of Beauty and Craftsmanship

Imagine a rough gemstone, fresh from the mine. It is dull and unshaped, but it holds within it the potential for beauty. I see this potential, and set out to bring it to life.

 

Cutting and polishing gemstones is a delicate process. The lapidary must carefully remove the excess material without damaging the gemstone. My gemstone drop earrings are a testament to the skill of the lapidary.

I am, by nature, curious and fascinated by gemstones and I am always eager to visit a magnificent gem collection, among my favorites is the newly renovated American Museum of Natural History and the more hidden in Paris at Musée de Minéralogie inside the Ecole des Mines de Paris by the Luxembourg gardens which was founded by Louis XIV. 

I source my gemstones from all over the world. I have a vast network of gem dealers that I have built relationships with for more than two decades, and I ensure that my gemstones are ethically sourced. 

 

It is a long process from the rough stones to the final dangling earrings hanging in my shop. 

I have studied gemology both in New York at the prestigious Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and at L'École des Arts Joailliers Paris under Dominique Dufermont and Marie-Laure Cassius-Duranton from the Institut National de Gemmologie (ING).

I work closely with a 5th generation Brazilian family in New York's Diamond District to cut and polish his gemstones. Maykel and his family (mother, grandmother and cousins) have all been a huge support for me to get his hands-on - know-how of how the different rough gemstones can be cut and polished. I mostly prefer a cabochon drop shape, smooth and shiny, but he also uses marquise, oval, and emerald cuts.

Cutting and polishing gemstones is a skilled art form, and my gemstone drop earrings are a testament to the craftsmanship involved. Each earring is a unique work of art, with its own individual beauty.

When the rough gems are cut and polished, the hard test comes drilling the top, because it's the most narrow part. Finally the yellow gold eye + screw is placed, so the beautiful gem drop can dangle from the yellow gold handmade ear wires.

The choice of gemstones, some have a specific drop shape they especially like, some prefer a color or nuance over another, some have a connection to a gem. Every single gemstone drop earrings that I make is different. The various choice of gemstones also makes the weight differ from pair to pair.

Rock Crystal also known as Clear Quartz is a fantastic gemstone and great example. From its rough material we have this sample of my design in cabochon and faceted cut. 

Considering its place in the Quartz family of gemstones, Rock Crystal has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs Scale. Both the hand cut gemstones show the prime qualities of Rock Crystal.
