Inside the Atelier: Saint André Perrin Terre Mêlée Ceramics & Exclusive Pre-Order
Share
Certain objects reveal themselves with intention, through material, weight, and the simple complexity of their making. The work of Sylvie Saint André Perrin belongs to this category: ceramics shaped entirely by hand, where pattern and form emerge from within the clay itself.
At BON TON goods, we are pleased to present an exclusive pre-order of Atelier Saint André Perrin ceramics, available throughout the month of May. Each piece is made to order in the Paris atelier, with a lead time of approximately 6–9 months. This is a rare opportunity to secure specific forms and color compositions, created especially for you.
Material, Not Surface
At first glance, these works appear richly patterned, almost painterly. But what distinguishes them is that nothing is applied to the surface. The color is the clay itself. The pattern is not decoration, but structure.
Working in the historic French technique of terre mêlée, layers of differently pigmented clay are combined, pressed, folded, and shaped. The result is a marbled composition that runs entirely through the material, giving each object a depth and movement that cannot be replicated.
A Living French Tradition
Associated historically with the ceramics of Apt in Provence, terre mêlée is both technically demanding and deeply expressive. It requires a precise understanding of material, but also a sensitivity to movement and restraint. Too much intervention and the pattern collapses. Too little and it remains static.
Sylvie Saint André Perrin is among the very few contemporary ceramicists working at this level within the tradition, bringing a distinctly Parisian sensibility to a historic process.
Made to Order, Shaped by Hand
Each piece begins long before it takes form. Clay bodies are mixed by hand, colors adjusted through experience rather than formula. Layers are composed, then shaped within molds, each movement leaving its trace within the final object.
No two pieces can ever be identical. Even within the same palette, each work carries its own internal composition. This is what gives these ceramics their presence: they feel less like products and more like individual works.
A Rare Opportunity to Select
Alongside a curated selection available now, this pre-order introduces an expanded range of forms and color compositions, allowing for a more considered selection process. Each order is placed directly with the atelier and produced specifically for BON TON goods.
The palette itself becomes part of the decision. Subtle variations in tone, density, and movement give each mix its own character, from quiet neutrals to more expressive marbled compositions.
Objects That Shape a Space
These are not decorative accents in the conventional sense. Each piece holds weight, both visually and materially, shaping the atmosphere of a space rather than simply occupying it.
Placed alone, they carry a quiet presence. Grouped together, they create a dialogue of tone and movement, revealing new relationships over time.
