Tanger: Astier de Villatte’s New Scent Has Arrived

A new destination in scent

Neroli, orange blossom and sun-warmed citrus carry Astier de Villatte’s olfactory journey to Tangier.

There are fragrances that describe a place, and others that seem to open a door into it. Tanger, the newest scent from Astier de Villatte, belongs to the second kind. Bright with bergamot and mandarin, softened by neroli and orange blossom, and steadied by herbaceous maté and musk, it captures the exhilaration of moving from whitewashed streets into a hidden garden.

The setting is Tangier, known as Tanger in French: the Moroccan port city where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, and where artists, writers and adventurers have long been drawn by the light. Astier de Villatte approaches that history through atmosphere rather than nostalgia. The result is not a postcard, but a living impression of brightness, warmth, foliage and salt air.

A fragrance of blue doors and white walls, citrus leaves, warm air and the sudden coolness of a secret garden.

Tangier, translated into fragrance

Astier de Villatte’s official story begins above the Strait of Gibraltar, looking across beaches of fine white sand before descending into the old city’s winding lanes. Whitewashed houses and brilliant blue doors give way to medina cafés, mint tea and the green abundance of surrounding botanical gardens. In that transition, the character of Tanger emerges: luminous, generous and gently mysterious.

Perfumer Sylvie Fischer of Takasago composed Tanger around neroli, the fragrant blossom of the bitter orange tree. Bergamot and mandarin create the first flash of light. Neroli brings a freshness that is both smooth and exhilarating, while orange blossom adds a softer, warmer floral note. Maté introduces an aromatic green tension, and musk gives the composition its quiet persistence on the skin.

This balance is what makes Tanger especially compelling. Citrus can be fleeting, but here it is given architecture. The floral notes are radiant without becoming sweet, the maté keeps the fragrance alive and herbaceous, and the musk extends the experience without weighing it down. It feels polished, but never overly formal; transportive, but entirely at home in daily life.

One scent, three rituals

Tanger has arrived at BON TON goods in three complementary forms: a scented candle for the home, an eau de parfum for the skin and a perfumed hand wash that brings fragrance into the smallest daily ritual. Each expression has its own tempo, yet all share the same bright composition.

The candle: a room filled with light

The Tanger Scented Candle turns the fragrance into an interior atmosphere. Its hand-blown glass and domed cloche have the familiar, quietly theatrical presence of Astier de Villatte’s candle collection. Unlit, it is already an object; illuminated, the glow through the clear glass gives the fragrance another dimension.

Astier de Villatte makes the candle in France from a distinctive plant-based wax blend with a touch of beeswax and a pure cotton wick. The house gives a burn time of approximately 60 to 70 hours. Tanger’s citrus and neroli have a natural affinity with daylight, but the candle becomes particularly beautiful at dusk, when the floral warmth and musky base begin to feel more pronounced.

The eau de parfum: brightness held close

On the skin, the Tanger Eau de Parfum reveals the composition’s movement most clearly. The opening is vivid and sparkling, led by bergamot and mandarin. Neroli and orange blossom then create a warm floral heart, while maté and musk allow the scent to settle with a clean, green sensuality. It is an eau de parfum with presence, but also with air around it.

The hand wash: the everyday made beautiful

The Tanger Perfumed Hand Wash brings the scent into a gesture repeated throughout the day. The deep green bottle and old-world label look handsome beside a basin, while the fragrance leaves an elegant trace of citrus blossom and aromatic green notes. It is functional luxury in the best sense: useful, pleasurable and designed to be seen.

How to live with Tanger

Tanger is easy to place because its brightness changes the mood of a room without overwhelming it. Light the candle in an entrance before guests arrive, in a sitting room at the end of the afternoon, or beside the bath when you want the day to loosen its hold. Its neroli and citrus notes feel fresh in warm weather, while orange blossom, maté and musk give it enough depth for autumn and winter.

The perfume can stand alone, of course, but the three-part ritual has a particular charm. Begin with the hand wash, wear the eau de parfum, then light the candle at home. The repetition is subtle rather than insistent. Each form catches a different aspect of the composition, and together they turn fragrance into a thread running through the day.

The Astier de Villatte art of travel

Astier de Villatte has long treated fragrance as a form of imaginative travel. Its candles, perfumes and incense move through cities, gardens, libraries, hotels and remembered interiors, each one built around a precise atmosphere. The house’s ceramic workshop, printing press, publishing projects and perfume creations share the same instinct: to make objects that feel both useful and capable of carrying a story.

Tanger extends that world with unusual clarity. The scent is rooted in a real landscape and a recognisable botanical palette, yet it leaves room for the wearer or the room to complete the picture. For one person it may evoke the blue-and-white architecture of the medina; for another, the brightness of citrus peel, warm wood, clean linen or sea air moving through an open window.

That openness is part of its sophistication. Tanger does not try to reproduce a city literally. It distils an encounter with place: the dazzled eye, the shaded garden, the first cool sip of mint tea, the scent of orange trees carried on the air.
