The Villa Médicis Collection by Astier de Villatte looks to the forms of ancient Roman tableware, reinterpreted through the unmistakable white ceramics of the Parisian atelier. Created in partnership with the Académie de France in Rome - Villa Médicis, the collection brings together classical proportions, archaeological references and Astier de Villatte’s distinctly contemporary sensibility.

Generous oval dishes evoke the elongated forms of Roman hippodromes, while large, round and deeply proportioned pieces lend the collection a monumental presence. Plates are framed by broad borders reminiscent of ancient crockery, emphasizing their strong silhouettes and giving even the simplest forms a sense of architectural grandeur.

In antiquity, such wide borders might have been richly decorated with portraits, coloured arabesques and ornamental motifs. Astier de Villatte strips them of decoration entirely, rendering the historic forms purely and simply in white. The atelier’s luminous glaze and subtle handmade irregularities allow shape, proportion and craftsmanship to become the ornament.
