A beautifully preserved piece of early 20th-century Scandinavian folk art, this hand-painted wooden trade sign once advertised a small tobacco shop. The figure, dressed in a yellow coat, red trousers, and tricorne-style hat, stands among crates marked “Tabak” and “Virginia,” with a pipe raised in one hand. The imagery, typography, and palette reflect the vernacular style of commercial signage used throughout rural Sweden and Norway during this period.
Painted directly onto a single wooden plank, the surface shows honest color loss and wear, consistent with outdoor display and decades of handling. Rather than detracting, these marks enhance the piece’s authenticity and charm. The overall composition balances whimsy and practicality, typical of early shop signage intended to catch the eye and convey purpose at a glance.
Measuring 106 × 51 cm, this is a substantial decorative object with strong graphic impact. It can anchor a hallway, hang above a cabinet, or add warmth to a gallery wall. Rare to find in such complete original condition, it is a wonderful example of Scandinavian folk-art commercial craft.
