A table worth
gathering around.

The Christmas Table · A styling primer

A little theatre,
before dinner.

There is a lovely moment before everyone sits down: the candles are lit, the glasses catch their first reflections, and a small gold deer seems to have wandered between the plates. Christmas has arrived at the table.

Our setting begins with Coral & Tusk’s Christmas Flowers runner and the milky white glaze of Astier de Villatte. Trudon’s golden silhouettes rise above them; La Soufflerie’s stemware brings movement and light. Among white, cream and gold trees, Ino Schaller’s Santas and woodland figures make a miniature world of their own. Scented candles welcome guests into the room.

A table collected with feeling, and brought to life by the people around it.

01 · The first layer

Christmas flowers below,
white glaze above.

Coral & Tusk’s Christmas Flowers runner draws an embroidered garden along the table: poinsettias, amaryllises, paperwhites and holly in red, coral, white and pink. Let this be the festive foundation, with Astier de Villatte’s Daisy plates and scalloped platter bringing pale, tactile shapes to either side.

Lay the runner lengthways down the centre, directly on the table or over a plain ivory cloth. At 193 × 61 cm, it creates a generous field of embroidery; keep its flowers visible between the decorative groups. Set out every plate before arranging the centrepiece, fold napkins simply, then position the cutlery and glasses. These useful pieces establish how much space is left for Christmas.

Let the shapes vary: an oval platter, a scalloped edge, a simple folded napkin. Repeat cream, white and gold through the objects, allowing the runner’s embroidered flowers and greenery to supply the colour.

Bring the embroidery to life

Two trees.
A woodland celebration.

Carry the runner’s textile detail upwards with Coral & Tusk’s two felt Christmas trees. Peek a Tree hides woodland animals among its branches and gold metallic ornaments. Around the taller Ring Around Christmas Tree, fox, bear, badger, wolf and raccoon hold paws beneath colourful decorations and metallic gold tinsel.

Place them together in a slightly staggered pair: Ring Around Christmas Tree stands approximately 30.5 cm tall, while Peek a Tree is approximately 21.6 cm. Let them lead one group at the end of the runner, leaving the embroidered flowers visible around their bases. Echo their woodland company with an Ino Schaller deer or owl nearby, then continue the white-and-gold forest further along the table or onto the sideboard.

Red embroidered flowers lead the eye along the runner; white glaze and folded linen give each place its own quiet space.

02 · The golden hour

Let the brass
catch the light.

Trudon brings the drama. The three-arm, brass-plated Candelabra makes a sculptural focal point; the Chiselled and gold-plated Dutch candlesticks offer a more intimate rhythm along the table. Choose a silhouette to lead, then repeat it with space between each flame.

Against pale ceramics and embroidered runner, the warm metal feels wonderfully festive. Keep the tallest arrangement towards the end of the table or on a sideboard, where its outline can be enjoyed across the room.

A closer look

Let the light travel from brass to glass, from white glaze to a scatter of gold.

The pleasure is in the changes of surface: polished metal beside soft woodland figures, a finely drawn branch above the runner’s embroidery. Leave a little space around each group so its outline can be seen.

03 · A glass for the occasion

The sparkle
between the candles.

La Soufflerie’s handblown stemware introduces another kind of richness: light held in glass. Set a Tulipe Champagne Glass beside a Corvina wine glass, or choose the more theatrical Coppa Venezia for the opening toast.

Place a water glass above the knife and the wine glass beside it, leaving enough room to reach for either comfortably. A Champagne glass can join them for the toast, then move away as dinner begins. Mixing two silhouettes brings interest while repeating the same pairing at each place keeps the table composed.

The glass’s handmade character belongs with Astier’s white glaze and the softness of the cloth; together, they make the table feel personal before a single plate is served.

04 · The Christmas scene

A small forest.
A gathering of characters.

Now let Christmas wander in. Cody Foster’s cream Vintage Garland trees form the backdrop to a white-and-gold Santa and a golden deer with holly. Add a brilliant white deer, an owl, or a tiny gold-and-silver owl tucked into a quieter corner. Repeat the pale colours and warm glints so the figures feel like inhabitants of the same landscape.

Arrange them in little conversations: a deer turned towards the Santa, a tiny owl beside a tree. Let one group sit at the table’s end and another continue onto the sideboard. The pleasure is in discovering the details throughout the evening.

05 · Build the landscape

White branches,
golden glints.

Carry the cream Cody Foster trees into a fuller winter landscape with Ino Schaller’s Brilliant White Glitter Spruces, Gold Glitter Spruces and a gold beaded tree. Mixing their surfaces gives the centrepiece depth: soft branches, glittered outlines and the fine texture of beads.

Begin with three trees in different heights, placing the tallest towards an end of the table and stepping down towards the place settings. The 8 cm and 15 cm white spruces and 19 cm gold beaded tree offer a lower grouping; larger spruces can carry the scene onto a sideboard. Pieces are sold individually, so build a group to suit the space.

Leave small intervals between the groups, with a clear landing place for each serving dish. A forest that appears and disappears along the cloth feels generous without forming a wall between guests.

06 · Choose the characters

A company of
white-and-gold Santas.

Let the original White and Gold Beaded Santa be joined by a few relatives in the same luminous palette. White sponged glitter, a gold-and-white beaded coat and a snow-white Santa with a golden beaded edge each offer a different expression of the theme.

Choose one Santa to lead the main arrangement, then place a second near a smaller cluster of trees. A third can continue the story on the sideboard beside the taller forest. Turn each slightly towards a deer or a tree so the figures form little scenes.

The Gold/White Beaded Coat Santa is approximately 20 cm tall; the sponged-glitter Santa is 28 cm and the snow-white Santa approximately 30 cm. Keep the taller figures towards the ends or on the sideboard, and sit down briefly to check that guests can see one another.

The collector’s statement

A grand arrival
in brilliant white.

For a more theatrical Christmas room, let Ino Schaller’s one-of-a-kind Santa No. 3 preside over the scene. Approximately 51 cm tall, he brings together a brilliant white coat, gold beaded trim, a sack of toys and hand-painted detail in one commanding figure.

Give him a place of his own on the sideboard, or at the far end of a generous table where his height leaves conversation open. Gather a few white-and-gold trees nearby and repeat the brass and embroidery from the place settings. The smaller Santas and woodland figures can continue the story along the runner.

07 · Scent the welcome

Christmas in the air.
Candlelight on the table.

A scented candle belongs to the welcome as much as the flowers or the first glass of Champagne. Trudon’s Fir brings the green, resinous character of a Christmas tree, with cedar, myrrh and incense. Gabriel offers a warmer alternative: chestnut and woods, recalling a winter afternoon by the fire. Choose one fragrance for the room and give it a place of its own.

Light a jar candle on a nearby console before guests arrive. Fir Scented Madeleines bring the same seasonal note to taper form, pairing naturally with Trudon’s Dutch candlesticks. During dinner, let fragrance take a quieter role so the food can be enjoyed; return to it with coffee or after the plates are cleared.

Set candleholders on stable surfaces with clear space around each flame, away from decorative trees, paper figures, greenery and linen. The glow should illuminate the scene from a comfortable distance.

The finishing touches

A little extravagance.
A sense of occasion.

A red cake candle on a glass pedestal. A Champagne bottle that is a candle in disguise. Among the winter whites and gold, these playful forms bring a festive flourish.

08 · Before the doorbell rings

Take a seat.
See the whole table.

Make one final check from a guest’s chair. Can you see the person opposite? Reach your water glass? Pass a platter without lifting a tree? Move any taller pieces to the ends or sideboard, and leave a generous space for the meal.

A simple arrangement to begin with: the Christmas Flowers runner, white plates, and a wine glass and water glass at each place. Add Coral & Tusk’s two felt Christmas trees as a pair, then place a smaller group of white-and-gold trees with one Santa and a deer further along the table. Add brass candlelight in clear spaces, and place a scented candle on the console for the welcome. Extend the same colours onto the sideboard if you would like a fuller display.

There is room here for treasured pieces collected over years and a few new arrivals. Let the palette connect them, and let the evening do the rest.
