A World in Stitches: New from Coral & Tusk
There are textiles that decorate a room, and then there are textiles that seem to invent an entire world within it.
That has always been the particular magic of Coral & Tusk. A fox is never simply a fox. A garden is populated with tiny dramas. Birds gather, bears wander, flowers grow, and somewhere in the embroidery there is nearly always another small detail waiting to be discovered.
Our newest arrival brings that world back into focus with embroidered pillows, pocket pillows, tea towels, table linens, books and cards — pieces made for rooms that are collected rather than decorated.
Founded by artist Stephanie Housley, Coral & Tusk begins with drawing. Stephanie’s original pencil illustrations are translated stitch by stitch into intricate embroidery, preserving the gestures, expressions and narrative detail of her hand-drawn characters. The result sits somewhere between textile, illustration and storytelling.
The Pillows: A Landscape in Embroidery
The pillows are where the new collection really begins.
Some feel almost like embroidered paintings. Gardens spread across linen; birds perch among branches; woodland creatures appear between leaves; little gatherings unfold in thread. Others focus on a single scene or character, allowing just a few beautifully observed details to carry the entire composition.
We especially love the way Coral & Tusk pillows work in a room that already has a life of its own. They do not require a matching scheme. In fact, they are often better without one.
Place one against an old chair, mix several on a sofa, put a small embroidered pillow against a grand patterned textile, or let a garden scene interrupt an otherwise rather serious room. The natural linen gives the work quietness; the embroidery supplies the wit.
That quality becomes especially clear when you look closely. What first reads as pattern begins to reveal little expressions, gestures, leaves, flowers and creatures hidden among the stitches.
The floral pieces are particularly good at this. They bring color without becoming loud and pattern without requiring everything around them to match.
And then there is Storytime, a perfect example of how much narrative Coral & Tusk can fit into a single piece of linen. Animals gather around a book as though we have wandered into the middle of a story already in progress.

Pocket Pillows: Small Worlds Within Worlds
Then there are the pocket pillows — perhaps the purest expression of Coral & Tusk’s imagination.
These embroidered linen pillows contain removable little characters tucked into pockets within the design. A beautifully embroidered scene suddenly becomes dimensional: a creature can emerge from its hiding place, move through the landscape and return home again.
They are playful, certainly, but never disposable or throwaway. The workmanship is too considered and the drawings too good. Instead, they have the charm of an illustrated storybook made dimensional.
We love them mixed among larger pillows, where the change of scale makes a sofa, chair or bed feel collected over time. They are also the sort of object guests inevitably notice, inspect and then smile at — which is no small achievement for a pillow.
Tea Towels Worth Looking At
Coral & Tusk has always understood that useful things needn’t be visually anonymous.
The embroidered tea towels take something completely ordinary and give it the same attention as the larger textiles. Flowers, gardens, animals and harvest motifs appear on natural linen in compositions detailed enough to deserve a second look.
Use them. Hang them from an oven door. Leave one folded beside a sink. Bring one out with bread at the table. They become part of the room rather than something to be hidden in a drawer.
It is a small luxury, but one we particularly believe in: everyday objects should be allowed to be beautiful.
The Table as a Landscape
The embroidered table runner takes the idea further.
Running down the length of a table, Coral & Tusk’s embroidery becomes almost panoramic. Rather than simply filling space, the design creates a landscape beneath plates, glasses, candlesticks and whatever else has accumulated around the table.
We particularly like these textiles on old wood, painted tables and simple linen cloths, where the embroidery can remain the focus. They do not need elaborate styling. A few branches, good glassware, candles and the things you actually use are enough.
A Storybook You Can Keep
The world Stephanie Housley creates in thread also belongs naturally on the printed page.
ABC: An Animal Alphabet Adventure brings Coral & Tusk’s cast of animals together in book form — full of the same observation, humour and extraordinary little details found throughout the embroidered collection.
It is ostensibly an alphabet book, but that description hardly captures its appeal. Like the best illustrated books, it is as satisfying for the person reading aloud as for the person being read to. It belongs just as happily on a coffee table or bookshelf as it does in a child’s room.
And Finally, A Note
There is something wonderfully stubborn about sending a proper card.
Coral & Tusk makes the argument for it beautifully. Their embroidered cards begin with original artwork translated into stitching on cotton, which is then attached to handmade paper. They are correspondence, but also tiny textile works.
The designs join a collection of animals, flowers, friendship, celebrations and small moments that feel personal without becoming sentimental.
And after the message has been read, the card does not need to disappear into a drawer. At 5 × 7 inches, it can be slipped directly into a standard frame and kept as a miniature piece of embroidered art.
Objects That Ask You to Look Closer
Perhaps that is what connects everything Coral & Tusk makes.
These are objects that reward attention.
From across the room you see a beautiful linen pillow. Move closer and there is a bird in the branches. Closer still and another character appears. A flower has an unexpected stitch. An animal has an expression. A tiny story has been hiding in plain sight.
