Autumn Jewels: A Gemstone Palette by Mikkel Brøgger

Carnelian bead necklace on forest green silk by Mikkel Brøgger

Autumn is often described through leaves, light and weather. In jewelry, its character can be expressed more gently: through the depth of a smoky stone, the warmth of polished carnelian, the flash of labradorite or the near-black surface of agate. The season becomes a study in material—russet, tobacco, charcoal, honey, mineral grey, cream and vivid turquoise blue.

Autumn Jewels brings together a one-of-a-kind selection by Danish jewelry designer Mikkel Brøgger. Handmade in New York City and selected for BON TON goods in Malmö, the collection moves between sculptural silver, disciplined goldwork, hand-strung silk and gemstones chosen for their natural color and individuality.

The Browns & Smokes

Smoky quartz, auburn quartz and tiger’s eye form the heart of the palette. Their colors are not flat browns, but layered mineral tones: cognac, chestnut, tobacco, warm grey and burnished gold. Light moves through them differently. Auburn quartz holds an opaque, earthy depth, while smoky quartz softens light through translucent grey. Tiger’s eye brings its own shifting glow, a banded shimmer that changes as the stone moves.

The contrast between these stones and Mikkel’s restrained metalwork is essential. The settings do not compete with the gemstones; they clarify them. A long quartz drop becomes a clean line. A strand of substantial beads becomes a rhythm of color and weight. The result is expressive, but never excessive.

Black, Grey & Changing Light

Black agate, grey agate and labradorite give the collection its darker, more architectural quality. Black agate is deep and lacquer-like, especially striking when paired with Mikkel’s sculptural sterling silver Stone Link. Grey agate is softer—mist, wet stone and November sky—while labradorite refuses to settle into a single color. Its surface shifts from grey to flashes of blue, green and violet as the light changes.

These are stones that reward looking. Their beauty is not simply decorative; it is atmospheric. They carry the same tension that runs throughout Mikkel’s work: organic material held within a disciplined form.

Fire Tones

Carnelian is the clearest expression of autumn in the collection. Its color moves from burnt orange and persimmon to brick red and deep rust. In the drop earrings, the elongated stones create a slender line of color against yellow gold. In the statement necklace, large polished beads are strung on deep forest-green silk and anchored by a sculptural Stone Link in solid 14k gold.

The combination feels inevitable once seen: the warmth of carnelian intensified by green, the polish of the stone set against the softness of silk. It is confident jewelry, but its drama comes from proportion and material rather than ornament for ornament’s sake.

Pale Stones & Mineral Blue

Cream amazonite and moonstone provide breathing space among the darker stones. Their pale mineral colors recall parchment, warm stone, mist and first frost. The moonstone pendant is suspended from Japanese MOKUBA cotton cord, an understated choice that keeps the luminous oval stone at the center of the composition.

Turquoise is the unexpected note. Rather than belonging to the season in any literal way, its blue-green color sharpens everything around it. Against carnelian, smoky quartz, black agate and oxidized metal, the stone feels elemental—a flash of mineral color within an otherwise earthy palette.

Jewelry Made to Be Lived With

Mikkel Brøgger’s jewelry is grounded in the belief that precious objects need not be remote from everyday life. A one-of-a-kind stone can be exceptional and still become familiar: worn often, remembered through touch and gradually connected to the life of its owner. This is the spirit explored further in The Slow Jewelry Manifesto.

Each piece in Autumn Jewels is handmade and individually composed. Natural variations are not flaws to be standardized away, but the source of each object’s character. Gemstone, metal, scale and color are brought into balance with a sculptor’s eye, creating jewelry intended to last beyond a single season.
