A Little Light, A Little Whimsy: The Art of Candlelight

BON TON goods · The art of candlelight

A little light.
A little whimsy.

As the evenings grow darker, a familiar room begins to ask for something different. A few candles. A little height on the table. A favourite scent. And perhaps a duck, a monkey or a small sparrow to keep us company.

Inspired by Mikkel’s recent arrangements for BON TON goods, this is our invitation to bring a little more light, warmth and character into the everyday—with Astier de Villatte and Trudon.

Light with a personality

A charming duck.
A mischievous monkey.
A little sparrow.

Astier de Villatte’s candleholders are small sculptures with a useful purpose. A duck stands proudly beneath its candle; a monkey curls around the stem; a sparrow brings a quiet, curious presence to the table. Each gives a familiar ritual its own character.

Handmade in Paris from black terracotta and finished with the Maison’s milky-white glaze, these pieces preserve the variations of the artisan’s hand. The white catches the light beautifully, while the shapes remain just as engaging in the morning, long after the candles have been put out.

Set one beside a painting, on a side table or among objects you already love. A candleholder need not wait for a perfectly dressed dining table to earn its place.

The Peggy collection

Gather a little height.

The Peggy candlesticks bring a different rhythm: twisting forms, generous bases and the familiar white glaze of Astier de Villatte.

Mikkel’s arrangement lets the heights play against one another, with flowers and a patterned backdrop giving the white ceramics room to stand out. At home, a pair can frame the end of a table; a small gathering creates a landscape of its own.

Let the objects relate without making them identical. A tall candlestick, a lower vessel and a little space between them can be all an arrangement needs.

The photographs show a styled arrangement. Individual pieces are sold separately; see each product page for its dimensions and current availability.

The atmosphere of a room

Then comes the scent.

A candle can give a room more than light. Its fragrance can suggest a place, a memory or a change of pace: a winter afternoon, polished wood, the freshness of a garden.

For an evening with depth and warmth, begin with Trudon. Gabriel brings birch wood, candied chestnut, cashmere wood and cedar. Cire turns toward honey, waxed wood, beeswax absolute and sandalwood: a rich accompaniment to amber glass and low light.

For another mood, Astier de Villatte’s Tanger opens a window onto something brighter. Neroli, citrus and the green, gently bitter note of maté suggest a fragrant garden. The scent can be chosen for the way you want an evening to feel, rather than simply for the season outside.

A festive turn

For the evenings ahead.

As Christmas approaches, the ritual becomes a little more celebratory. Trudon’s Holiday 2026 collection, La Nuit des Glaces, brings mirror-finish vessels and fragrances made for winter gatherings.

Fir draws on the green, resinous character of a Christmas tree, with Siberian pine, cedar, myrrh and incense. Nazareth takes a warmer path through bitter orange, cinnamon and clove. One suggests the forest; the other, the fragrance of a house preparing for guests.

At the table

A slender line of light.

Nazareth Scented Madeleines bring the same orange-and-spice fragrance to a set of six slender tapers. For an intimate dinner, let the candles and their holders carry the arrangement, leaving room for conversation and the meal.

The pleasure is in the balance: a slender candle above a sculptural base, a little height beside a low bowl, and enough space for the table to feel generous.

The pleasure of coming home

Make an evening of it.

Bring a candle to the place where you actually sit. Let a white ceramic animal interrupt a serious arrangement. Gather Peggy candlesticks at different heights, or choose one fragrance that marks the end of the working day.

As Mikkel’s posts remind us, even the smallest objects can bring considerable joy to everyday life. The aim is a home that feels welcoming, personal and full of things you are happy to see again.

A little light. A little warmth. A little whimsy.
