Eatnamastit: Outi Pieski at Malmö Art Museum

A Celebration of Art, Identity, and the Interconnectedness of All Things
In a world that often rushes forward, the work of Outi Pieski invites us to pause—and root ourselves. From now through October 26, Malmö Art Museum presents Eatnamastit, the most comprehensive exhibition in Sweden to date by the acclaimed Sámi artist, and it is nothing short of extraordinary.
Pieski, based in Ohcejohka (Utsjoki) in the far north of Finland, brings to Malmö a body of work that is both deeply personal and powerfully communal. Through painting, photography, textiles, installation, and video, she creates a visual language of connection—between humans and nature, past and future, spirit and earth.
The exhibition’s title, Eatnamastit, speaks to the idea of grounding oneself in the land—a concept woven through Pieski’s artistic and cultural identity. Her work is rooted in duodji, the traditional Sámi craft tradition that carries with it not only beauty but memory, resistance, and healing. In Pieski’s hands, fringe becomes voice, and thread becomes testimony.
This is art that whispers and roars. It touches on ancestry, ecology, and belonging. It reminds us that nature is not something outside of ourselves, but rather something we are part of—bound to with invisible threads of respect and responsibility.
Malmö continues to surprise us with its cultural depth, and this exhibition is yet another example of why we choose to call this city home. It is not only a place of sea and sky and rhythm—but one of serious creative spirit. At BON TON goods, we often say that Malmö is full of quiet revelations. Eatnamastit is one of them.
So, after visiting the Malmö Art Museum—perhaps after a morning with Outi Pieski’s landscapes and radical softness—wander down our cobblestone street. Let the art linger with you. Come see how craft, connection, and story take shape in another form at BON TON. We, too, believe in the beauty of what is handmade, enduring, and rooted in something larger than ourselves.
