Vintage by Crystal is the studio of American artist Crystal Sloane, who gives a nearly lost European ornament tradition a playful and highly personal new life.
Crystal began developing her approach to spun-cotton figures in 2004, inspired by antique German ornaments and by her own German-American family history. Rather than reproducing a fixed antique exactly, she uses the material to create an expanding cast of Santas, children, animals, birds, sea creatures, Halloween characters, woodland residents, and dreamlike hybrids.
The work feels convincingly old and unmistakably original at the same time. Each figure has a particular posture, expression, costume, and story. That individuality is why people collect them well beyond Christmas.

Spun-cotton figures are built by wrapping and shaping cotton around an armature, then allowing it to harden into a light but dimensional form. Layer by layer, the maker establishes body, gesture, costume, and surface.
