Marcie McGoldrick’s Leo lies in profile, its body held in a long, calm line while its modelled mane creates texture and shadow. From the Grand Tour to Philadelphia

The pendant begins with the culture of the Grand Tour. For generations, travellers journeyed through Europe to encounter the art, architecture, and remains of classical antiquity. Cameos, plaster impressions, engravings, and small casts allowed fragments of that experience to travel home with them. They became records of places visited, objects studied, and histories admired.

Marcie McGoldrick works with vintage Grand Tour plaster casts, preserving their classical imagery while changing their material and purpose. She makes molds from the antique plasters, then casts each design in porcelain tinted by hand in her Philadelphia studio.

Through this process, the original relief is neither copied mechanically nor treated as something untouchable. The variations created by the porcelain, its colour, and the hand-finishing give the historic image a new life. Each Leo Pendant is recognizably part of the same family, but no two will have exactly the same hue, surface, or character.

Indigo, Silver, and a Beaded Cord

Colour changes the way we encounter the past. Rather than imitate the pale stone or white plaster associated with classical sculpture, Marcie casts the Leo cameo in richly tinted indigo porcelain. The blue has depth without heaviness, and its subtle variations reveal the nature of an object coloured and finished by hand.

A sterling-silver surround defines the cameo’s softened rectangular form. The beaded cord adds another layer of texture while keeping the necklace easy and natural to wear. Measuring approximately 38 millimetres, the pendant has enough scale to hold its own over a simple dress, shirt, or knit, while remaining light enough for layering.
