Across the Sound: Mikkel Brøgger and the Art of Transition
This October, BON TON goods presents a special three-day exhibition by Danish-American-Swedish jeweller and designer Mikkel Brøgger as part of The City of Jewellery 2026.
Across the water, across traditions
Between Copenhagen and Malmö lies the Øresund, a body of water that is both boundary and bridge. It separates two countries while connecting two cities, two histories, and generations of Scandinavian craft.
From 1 to 3 October 2026, BON TON goods presents Across the Sound, known in Danish as På Tværs af Øresund, a three-day exhibition of contemporary goldsmithing by Mikkel Brøgger. Created as part of The City of Jewellery 2026, the exhibition carries the festival’s programme across the water to Malmö.
The exhibition responds to the 2026 theme, Transition, or Overgang, through an exploration of movement, place, material, and continuity. It considers the Øresund not only as a geographical threshold, but as a passage through which people, ideas, and traditions have travelled for centuries.
Material as landscape
At the centre of Across the Sound is a suite of jewelry in yellow gold, aquamarine, and diamond. Each material carries its own association with the landscape surrounding the exhibition.
Yellow gold is treated as a living material: warm, continuous, and shaped by the hand of the maker. Aquamarines recall the shifting blues of the Øresund. Diamonds capture and scatter the changing Nordic light. Together, the materials form a visual language that is architectural yet intimate, precise yet alive.
The works bring crown-like forms, geometric settings, organic movement, and carefully balanced asymmetry into conversation. Seen at close range, every clasp, setting, and articulated link reveals the rhythm of traditional goldsmithing. These are not simply decorative objects. They are small sculptures intended to be worn, lived with, and carried forward.
A contemporary goldsmith
Mikkel Brøgger is a Danish-American-Swedish jeweller and designer whose practice combines traditional craft with an international design perspective. His jewelry is grounded in the disciplines of the goldsmith’s bench, yet shaped by a distinctly contemporary understanding of form.
Architecture, historical ornament, natural structure, and the movement of the body all inform his work. Precious metals and gemstones become more than materials of value. They become carriers of memory, place, and personal meaning.
Brøgger’s approach is especially suited to the theme of transition. A piece of jewelry moves from raw material to crafted object, from maker to wearer, and often from one generation to the next. Its meaning changes over time while the object itself endures.
Copenhagen’s goldsmithing tradition, presented in Malmö
Copenhagen has been a centre for goldsmithing and silversmithing for centuries. The City of Jewellery brings that tradition into the present through exhibitions, workshops, and encounters with contemporary makers.
Across the Sound extends this conversation into Malmö. The location is significant. Zealand and Scania share a long cultural history, and the Øresund has always been a route for exchange. Presenting the exhibition at BON TON goods allows the work to be encountered in an intimate setting, close to the objects and close to the maker.
Visitors are invited to look slowly. The scale of jewelry rewards attention. A diamond catches the light differently as the viewer moves. A gold surface reveals the trace of the hand. An aquamarine shifts from pale blue to something deeper, recalling the water only a short distance away.
